Police have confirmed a man has died in a crane rollover on North West Coastal Highway this afternoon.

In a single vehicle incident, the crane rolled over and caught fire just before 11.30am on the highway, about 60km south of Hedland near Mundabullangana.

Police, Department of Fire and Emergency Service fire fighters and St John Ambulance attended the scene.

Authorities closed the highway after the incident, but one lane has since been re-opened.

South Hedland police officer-in-charge Senior Sargent Jeremy Marklew said there was not yet an official estimated time for the road to fully re-open, but police estimated traffic would resume flow “shortly”.
