Helping new residents to put down deep roots in the community of Newman is the aim of the game at a special event later this month.

The Shire of East Pilbara is inviting the community to the annual Welcome to Newman event on March 14 from 4pm-9pm at Kangaroo Oval.

Bringing together residents, families, clubs and organisations, the gathering will showcase everything Newman has to offer.

Shire of East Pilbara president Cr Anthony Middleton said Welcome to Newman played an important role in helping people put down roots in a remote town with a constantly changing population.

“People come to Newman from all over Australia, and often the world, for work, but what makes them stay is feeling connected,” he said.

“This event helps people find their club, their community group, their volunteering opportunity, or simply meet others in the same boat. That sense of belonging matters.

“Families will again be a strong focus, with free children’s activities including bouncy castles, live entertainment and interactive displays designed to encourage participation across all ages.”

The event provides a rare opportunity for newcomers and long-term residents to connect directly with sporting clubs, community groups and service providers through market stalls and interactive come-and-try stations hosted by local sports groups.

These hands-on activities are designed to encourage participation, registration, and volunteering.

The event will also feature live entertainment, a range of food vans, and additional market stalls.

The event will again feature guided bus tours of the Mount Whaleback mine, offering residents a rare opportunity to see one of the world’s largest open-cut iron ore operations up close.
