Josh BlairNorth West Telegraph

Week two of Hedland water polo was played last Friday night.

Game one was a re-run of last season’s grand final in the women’s competition.

It concluded with the same result with Aztecs winning 13-7.

Kenleigh Wilson and Tess Mellberg dominated, scoring 11 of Aztecs’ goals.

Alexandra Motus stood up for Piranhas scoring three.

Dragons were up against Blackstars in game two of the men’s competition.

With both teams missing some star players it was great to see other players step up.

Blackstars played the better polo though, winning 11- 6.

Steve Smirkes strong pre-season looks to be paying dividends with a best in pool effort scoring three goals. Nathan “Ironman” Groch scored three goals to be best for Dragons.

In game three Orcas were up against Vipers.

Vipers made a good comeback but left it too, late losing to Orcas 8-5. AJ Ryan and Kathryn Fisher both scored three goals.

Jasmin Kilmartin was Vipers’ best. In the last game of the night Pointers played Men’s Composite.

In a surprising result Pointers outclassed the Composite team winning 10-6. Steve Smirke scored four goals to keep Composite in the game but with Scott “Freight Train” Gerhardt going down with cramps they couldn’t keep up with Pointers.

Brad Horsman returned looking a million dollars, bagging four into the onion bag.

The final game of round one is played this week.
