A 24-year-old female is in hospital with serious injuries following a crash on Hamilton Road in South Hedland overnight.

Police said the crash occurred at around 4am and required firefighters to extract the two occupants of the car.

Police suspect the male passenger received a broken ankle.

Senior Sergeant Dean Snashall said it was a serious crash and alleged it may have involved excessive speed.

“It is unbelievable that the people in this car survived and police need the public assistance to locate the driver who we believe decamped the scene immediately after the crash,” he said.

Major Crash officers from Perth will arrive in Hedland today to investigate the crash.

Witnesses are urged to call South Hedland Police or crime stoppers to report any information.
