Dressed to the nines in pink lipstick and pearl earrings, the State’s second-oldest resident celebrated a remarkable milestone in style on Tuesday.

Bridget Grocke turned 111, surrounded by friends, family and 111 roses.

“I can’t believe everyone is here, it’s amazing,” Ms Grocke said.

“And especially the roses, they are all so beautiful.”

White roses have long been Ms Grocke’s favourite. Her affection for them began more than 30 years ago, when her late daughter planted an Iceberg rose in her garden just before she passed.

Ms Grocke dismissed the idea of any grand formula being the key to a long life, but she was quick to credit her enduring happiness to those closest to her.

“I’ve lived a very happy life because I’ve got lots of friends and family,” she said.

Born in Leederville on November 18, 1914, she spent her early childhood in Kalgoorlie before moving to Perth when she was 18.

She found work at David Jones, then known as Aherns, where her keen eye for fashion emerged.

In 1942, she married her husband, Jim, at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Subiaco. Together they raised four children.

Though she lost Jim in 1985 and later two of their children, Ms Grocke remains surrounded by the warmth of her family — her son Robert, her daughter Jan, 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

At the age of 109, she moved into Bethanie Subiaco where she “keeps all the staff entertained”, Jan said.

“She’s slowing down, (and is) possibly a little more fragile than she used to be, but her humour is still there,” she said.

“She keeps all the staff at Bethanie entertained... this sort of celebration seems to give her a second life.”

Chefs at the nursing home prepared a spread worthy of the occasion on Tuesday — including Ms Grocke’s favourite morning tea of raisin bread with Vegemite, alongside a heart-shaped cake adorned with rose-style frosting, fruit platters, pastries and cupcakes.
