A vehicle breakdown on Mitchell Freeway southbound in Perth city is causing traffic headaches for drivers heading home on Saturday night.

The breakdown is located at Mounts Bay Road — famously the busiest stretch of the Freeway — and was reported by Main Roads at 5.24pm.

The vehicle has blocked the left lane of the Freeway, causing heavy traffic on approach to the site.

Vision shows traffic backed up past RAC Arena as the sun sets on the city.

Main Roads has urged drivers to exercise extreme caution and allow for a safe merge if planning to travel past the area.

More to come.
