The Shire of Ashburton council will vote next week on a proposal to fund a television program showcasing the Pilbara as a “premier destination” for tourism and relocation.
If approved, the shire would join the City of Karratha in a $62,000 collaboration to fund half of a dedicated 24-minute episode of the series Great Aussie Road Trips television series produced by Visage Productions.
Filming is slated to take place between late August and early September in Karratha, Tom Price, Paraburdoo, Onslow and the Mackerel Islands, and feature Python Pool, Cheela Plains Station, Millstream Chichester National Park and Karijini National Park.
The goal is to highlight the Pilbara’s lifestyle appeal and “adventure tourism” opportunities to attract not just visitors, but potential new residents and small business investors.
As part of the agreement, shire and the city of Karratha would retain full editorial control prior to broadcast and receive all rights to the footage and imagery for their own marketing and advocacy use.
The decision to fund the program will go to a vote at the ordinary council meeting on July 21.
