A Karratha family had a wonderful start to the new year as they welcomed their third child to the world.

Kelsey and Craig Fitzpatrick were surprised when their newborn Blake was the first child born in the Pilbara this year.

Blake was born on January 2 at Karratha Health Campus and weighed 3.3kg.

Mrs Fitzpatrick said she was in labour for just three hours.

“It was a big surprise, actually, because it's a really busy time for the Pilbara,” she said.

“I was the only one in there, which was crazy as it was busy previously.

“The midwives were excellent, hospital's great. I couldn't have asked for anything better.”

Mrs Fitzpatrick said Blake’s siblings Jayden, 7, and Riley, 5, were ecstatic to have another brother.

The WA Country Health Service celebrated the newborn with a Facebook post: “Karratha Health Campus was delighted to ring in the new year with the arrival of baby Blake — the first baby born in the region for 2021,” it said.
