Patriotic Karratha residents are set to don their best green and gold kit and fly the flag this Australia Day as a stellar line-up of fun and family events has been announced for the Pilbara town.

This year’s events will be headlined by the City of Karratha’s annual awards ceremony that recognises the dedication and services of the region’s excellent citizens. New Australians will also be welcomed at a citizenship ceremony at the Karratha Leisureplex.

A community sundowner event will then be held at the newly redeveloped Hampton Oval in Dampier in the evening.

Karratha Mayor Peter Long said Australia Day was a time to celebrate the rich and diverse land we live in.

“It provides an opportunity for us to appreciate and thank those people and groups within our community who go above and beyond to make our country an incredible place to live,” he said. “A big thank you to all our sponsors who have come on board in support of the awards and the community celebration. It’s going to be a wonderful day for our community.”

The Shire of Ashburton will also be hosting free community events in Tom Price, Paraburdoo, Onslow and Pannawonica.

Pannawonica will be celebrating in true Aussie style at the town’s Sporting Club with a thong throwing contest, a lamington eating competition, and prizes for the best Aussie hat.

In Exmouth, celebrations will take place at Paltridge Memorial Swimming Pool with free bacon and egg rolls, pool games and an aqua run.
