Healthy Ears on Country program set to improve the hearing of many living in remote communities

In a bid to address the pressing issue of ear health among Indigenous children in remote communities, BHP has announced a groundbreaking partnership with Ear Science Institute Australia. The initiative, named the Healthy Ears on Country program, aims to significantly improve long-term health outcomes within Aboriginal communities across the East Pilbara region. Indigenous children globally face significant challenges in ear health, with alarming statistics revealing that nine out of 10 Aboriginal children experience some form of ear disease. Left untreated, this condition can lead to permanent hearing loss, as well as developmental and speech delays. BHP has committed $825,000 over three years to bolster the scope of services available throughout the Pilbara. The money will fund new specialist equipment, additional staff and training for healthcare providers. BHP head of corporate affairs Meath Hammond emphasised the importance of addressing the healthcare needs of regional and remote communities. “Access to quality health care is an ongoing challenge experienced by regional and remote communities,” Mr Hammond said. “We are proud to partner with Ear Science to support the amazing work they do in the Pilbara, with a long-term vision to improve the ear health and quality of life for Indigenous peoples.” Ear Science ear health coordinator Lucy Mitchell expressed gratitude for BHP’s support and underscored the potential impact of the collaboration on Indigenous communities in the East Pilbara. “We are thrilled to have BHP on board,” Ms Mitchell said. “With their support, we can expand and improve care on country, boost community involvement, and ensure the program’s long-term sustainability for the Martu and Nyiyaparli peoples in the East Pilbara.” The program targets Indigenous communities in Newman, Jigalong, Punmu, Parnngurr and Kunawarritji, aiming to directly benefit more than 500 children. Key objectives of Healthy Ears on Country include providing onsite and portable ENT and audiological equipment and employing two Martu community liaison officers to ensure service integration. Additionally, the program aims to reduce barriers for individuals requiring surgery in Port Hedland and Perth.
