Karratha Falcons and Hedland Blazers both took home victories in theNorth Pilbara Football League

A four goal haul by Amy Smeding powered the Karratha Falcons to victory over the Dampier Sharks in round five of the North Pilbara Football League women’s competition. The Falcons took a nine-point lead at the end of the first term after a slow start from both teams at Bulgarra Oval on Saturday. Pressure from the Sharks in the second quarter saw Sanika Rosewood get the Sharks on the board kicking the sides first goal of the game but Falcons were able to outgun the visiting side to lead by 15 points at the main break. The Falcons flew away with the game in the third term, kicking 3.2 while shutting down the Sharks offence to take a game high 37-point lead into the final change. The final quarter saw both teams fight hard for the ball, but Falcons continued to show their class, extending their lead with two goals while the Sharks booted two behinds. The final score saw Karratha Falcons 7.11 (53) defeat Dampier Sharks 1.4 (10). Meanwhile at Kevin Scott Oval in South Hedland the Hedland Blazers scored their first win in the competition, dismantling Wickham Wolves by 95 points. A five-goal opening term set the tone for the Blazers who had their best performance of the season against the travelling Wolves. Blazers were able to shut down the Wolves attack and dominate the game, kicking 3.2 in the second term to hold an imposing 50 point lead at the main break. The second half saw the Blazers continue to burn their way to victory, booting a further six goals while shutting out the Wolves over the whole game. The final score saw Hedland Blazers 14.11 (95) defeat the Wickham Wolves 0.0 (0). Hedlands’ Hellena Djiagween booted five goals and was supported by Breda Morrissey, Adrienne Hinkes and Renae Tucker who kicked two goals each. Hedland will face a tough test next week when they take on the reigning premiers Karratha Kats at Millars Well while Karratha Falcons will host Wickham Wolves at Bulgarra Oval.
