Karratha re-emerge as champs

Karratha Gymnastics Club were announced as the joint winner of champion club at a major regional gymnastics meet, claiming the title for a third consecutive year.

A strong performance at the North West Invitational competition held in Broome late last month saw the Karratha group of about 50 gymnasts do their club proud when their efforts won it joint top club, along with Broome’s Pearl Coast, for the competition.

From a pool of 150 competitors including from Broome, Hedland, Carnarvon and Perth, a number of Karratha gymnasts won their individual divisions and the majority improved on their personal scores for the year.

KGC president Janet Nicholson said their gymnasts’ recent work on addressing judge feedback from previous competitions and honing specific skills had paid off.

She said she was very proud of how well the Karratha club members had performed.

“Each judge votes each session you’re part of it and it goes on not just how well you perform but also sportsmanship, etiquette and how they conduct themselves,” she said.

“So it’s great that even though they’re competing against each other they’re still showing they’re a team as well.”

“That’s more important to me than winning every apparatus ... they represented us really well.”

The Invitational is the last of two major events held by the North West Regional Gymnastics Association this year.
