New exhibition in Claremont featuring Cheeditha Art Group, Juluwarlu Art Group, and Yinjaa-Barni Art opens

Side by side is the theme of a new exhibit opening in Claremont this month featuring senior and emerging Ieramagadu artists. The exhibition titled Ngardamarri opened at the Goods Shed on July 22 and features Cheeditha Art Group, Juluwarlu Art Group, and Yinjaa-Barni Art in partnership with FORM. Meaning side-by-side in Yindjibarndi language, Ngardamarri brings together senior and emerging artists to shine a light on the stories, talent and artistic diversity in this dynamic community. Artists travelled from Roebourne to Perth for a preview launch on July 22 before the opening celebration on July 23. The artists will participate in an artist talk and exhibition tour, providing an intimate insight into their individual artistic processes and the creative practices in the Roebourne community. The exhibition features more than 45 new works by some of the region’s top artists including Kaye Warrie, Tootsie Daniels, Alice Guiness and Allery Sandy. The works range from distinctly patterned paintings, to bold large-scale canvases, works on paper and carved yarranga marni boards and scratch boards Exhibition curator Annie McLoughlin said it had been a privilege to work with the artists of Cheeditha Art Group, Juluwarlu Art Group, and Yinjaa-Barni Art on Ngardamarri. “We’re honoured to be presenting such a special showcase of compelling art from some of the region’s most remarkable artists,” she said. Cheeditha artist Wendy Warrie said she felt proud to be sharing her paintings alongside her sisters and artists from her community. Juluwarlu artist and Yindjibarndi elder Tootsie Daniels said her artwork was a journey of healing. “I’ve got a new style and new techniques. I like to use bright colours. It reflects a brighter picture. I want my art to touch people and to be drawn to my paintings,” she said. “I want my paintings to speak to people. This is what I’m excited for.” The exhibit will run until September 26.
