Ngarluma teenager Braiden Irwin signed by Spain’s Palamos Football Club as he chases his soccer dream

A young Pilbara indigenous teenager is one step closer to becoming a soccer star after being signed by Spanish team Palamos Football Club. Braiden Irwin, 16, who belongs to the Kariyarra/Ngarluma language group, began playing soccer from the age of four and has gone from kicking water bottles in his backyard to travelling overseas to Spain in pursuit of his dream. The teenager is based at the Perfect Football Academy in the Costa Brava region of Spain. Palamos play in group one of the Primera Catalana league for 2021-22 and sit in eighth place. Irwin said he felt like he was accomplishing his dreams and doing something good with his life. “Since moving overseas my mindset has changed, my playing style, my aggressiveness at the right time, my patience and especially my skills has improved,” he said. “I reflect on my journey so far —I have come along way from starting to play football as a four-year-old. “I went from kicking water bottles around the yard when I had no ball to playing for my State in Australia to then playing overseas in the biggest soccer country that I have dreamed of as a little boy.” Irwin has previously played in various competitions in Western Australia and this year took part in the Mediterranean International Cup as part of the Rajasthan Perfect Football Club under 16 side. Last year Irwin was appointed as a youth ambassador for Football West Pilbara where he helped young Aboriginal kids to stay engaged with sport and also received his grassroots coaching certificate. The program also aims to engage young Aboriginal people to play soccer and support the men, women and elderly members of Aboriginal communities through social competitions. Speaking to the Pilbara News in September, Irwin said the program had taught him how to be a role model.
