Pilbara police have warned motorists to slow down or risk losing their licence ahead of the long weekend. The multanova, first wheeled out in the Pilbara last month, will be brought out again for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend with double demerits coming into effect from September 24 to 27 inclusive. Pilbara District co-ordinator Sergeant Ian Morris said police would not accept excessive speeds. “Many people have mentioned they don’t care about the fines but the points do add up and because it’s a long weekend with double demerits, 12 points can accumulate quickly and that’s their licence gone,” he said. “Slow down or your licence could be gone rather quickly and along with the multanova, there will also be significant police presence. “We want people to get wherever they’re going safely and we want to get the hoons off the road.” Police will also be out in force over the long weekend, targeting drink, drug, dangerous and distracted driving. Sgt Morris said the multanova would remain in the Pilbara for as long as needed until they get the amount of speeders down.
