School work for architects

A Karratha architecture firm will design the multi-million-dollar upgrade of a Pilbara primary school.

Hurley Architecture and Planning has been chosen by the State Government to carry out the design of Wickham Primary School’s new early learning classrooms.

The project, valued at $3.5 million, will include four purpose-built early childhood classrooms including teaching spaces, kitchens, and storerooms, and will have landscaped play areas.

The works are part of the State Government’s WA Recovery Plan and are expected to create more than 12 jobs.

The recovery plan was announced in August, with $67m in funds allocated to schools in the Pilbara.

Roebourne District High School received $42m to redevelop the facility, which will include a social and culturally led learning environment for Roebourne students from pre-school to secondary school, with specific programs to engage Aboriginal children.

Meanwhile, Karratha Senior High School has been awarded $22m for the development of new classrooms — in particular specialist technology learning rooms, and additional administration and student services facilities.

Wickham Primary School principal Steven Rushforth told the Pilbara News in August the construction of new facilities was a wonderful opportunity.

“(The students) are in demountables currently, and going into purpose-built classrooms will be an outstanding opportunity for them to get in there and further develop their wonderful programs,” he said.

Education Minister Sue Ellery said the upgrades would ensure staff had facilities to deliver the best possible learning opportunities.

Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel said he was proud the McGowan Government was expanding Wickham Primary School.

Mr Michel said the project would enhance education for local students and deliver local jobs.

Construction is expected to start in August and to be completed in May 2022.
