WA woman says Karratha Health Campus left her humiliated & traumatised after alleged rape

A mother of two allegedly drugged and raped says she was left humiliated and traumatised by her local hospital, which made her wait for eight hours for a simple DNA examination. She told The West Australian she then had to send her own photos of her bruised body to police because none were taken while she was being treated — despite officers attending. Alice, not her real name, had been found naked and shivering on the doorstep of a Dampier home in April after the alleged sexual assault. And despite the couple who found her calling ahead, the 42-year-old claims she was hauled through the front doors of the Karratha Health Campus emergency department. Wearing a dress the couple had given her, and trying to cover her face with a blanket, Alice said the walk through the waiting room was “mortifying” and “re-traumatising”. “There was no privacy or thought of how that would make me feel. I would have thought I would have been in a more private area,” she said. Admitted about 4.40am, Alice was not given an examination until 1pm. She says staff told her there weren’t rape DNA test kits available onsite. “I (also) didn’t have a support person there when (police) asked for the pin number to my phone. I should have had a support person,” she said. “A forensics officer arrived with a camera but never took photos. I provided the bruise photos later.” Alice had similar concerns about her treatment at the police station. “Walking out the front doors of Karratha police station — no shoes, no bra and hospital clothes provided. After what I went through — 10 hours in hospital with no support worker — it was humiliating,” she said. “I’m doing this (speaking out) because I don’t want any other women to deal with what I had to deal with.” Sexual violence support group Full Stop Australia’s Emily Dale said frontline services had been “slow to change” to victim-first practices. “The reality is that a lot of these systems — police, hospitals, certainly the legal system — actually weren’t set up with victim-survivors of sexual violence in mind,” she said. “Some victim-survivors that we work with report that they have found the experience of reporting to police, going through the legal system, or in some cases, going to seek medical care, is even more traumatic than the sexual violence itself.” WA Country Health Service said staff treat patients with “respect, courtesy, compassion and dignity” and claimed Alice had been placed in a “discreet” hospital room with a “one-on-one clinical support person”, allocated immediately. The hospital claimed she wasn’t taken through the “main entrance” but wouldn’t discuss it further because it could “potentially identify” her. Police, meanwhile, say a lack of evidence has brought them to a dead end. “This matter was thoroughly and comprehensively investigated by Karratha detectives and to date, there is insufficient evidence to proceed with charges,” a police spokeswoman said. Alice would like her case reopened and has called for a review into the resources and training of sexual assault staff in regional areas. She wants a particular focus on improving confidentiality. The Australian Law Reform Commission is considering how sexual violence laws could be improved and Alice’s revelations come after Queensland Health was forced to apologise to an alleged rape victim who left a hospital in tears. Suggested reforms include a better support service, women-only police stations, independent advocates in courtrooms and training for anyone receiving a disclosure of sexual violence.
