Teams from across the Pilbara descended on Windy Ridge Oval for a softball carnival to battle it out and see who was the best. The carnival kicked off on May 14 with a series of junior games with the Port Hedland Hurricanes taking on Ospreys and Sharks in a round robin series. The opening game had Sharks down Ospreys 8-5 before Port Hedland Hurricanes stepped up to the plate and dominated Sharks 6-1. In the final juniors game Ospreys overpowered the Hurricanes with a five-run victory 7-2. In the seniors’ games five teams from the West Pilbara battled it out for supremacy with Wickham proving they were the best on the day with two wins. The round robin games had the teams of Dampier Falcons, Storm, Geckos, Wickham and Sinners face off against each other. The opening seniors clash ended in a draw between Falcons and Storm with the sides finishing on four runs each after their seven innings. Wickham then faced off against Geckos and showed off their powerful batting line-up, dominating the game 11-0. A back-and-forth game between Sinners and Falcons had both sides scoring at will, but Falcons proved too much in the end taking the four run victory 11-7. A bout between Sinners and Storm had the Storm overrun Sinners by six runs 9-3 in a one-sided affair. Meanwhile, Geckos’ batting line-up exploded, having a run fest in their game against Storm, coming out on top 10-1. The final game of the weekend ended with Wickham securing a hard-fought victory against Sinners 3-1 to finish with two victories for the carnival. The carnival also featured a men’s game with Wickham taking on the Kardems, a team made up of Karratha and Dampier players to end the day. Despite most participants having not played for up to 15 years, it was a hard-fought and exciting six innings game with Kardems coming out on top 3-2.
