Wilson Street, between Cooke Point Road and Great Northern Highway, was closed from 8.30am, causing major traffic delays for commuters.

South Hedland police said a utility vehicle collided head-on with a van on the bridge about 8am this morning.

According to police, two men were trapped inside the vehicles and the Fire and Emergency Services Authority were called to cut the motorists free.

The road remained closed while the drivers were cut free and stabilised in waiting ambulances.

One man suffered a broken leg and broken wrist, while the other suffered only minor cuts and bruises.

Police said an arrangement with BHP Billiton and Main Roads WA was made to open BHP’s access track under the bridge to free up traffic.
