While Port Hedland won’t be represented on the field at country week this year, off the field Spirit Radio presenter David “Ecky” Eckhart will show off his umpiring talents.

Port Hedland Cricket Association will not be sending a team to Perth with other North West teams this year after being unable to pull together a complete team in time for the annual competition.

But the eclectic radio presenter will play his part regardless, travelling to the capital city on Friday to put his classic Port Hedland spin on umpiring the week-long Statewide sporting event.

“I’ve got three A-grade games and two B-grade games to umpire,” he said. “Hopefully I’ll have a final to umpire on the Saturday, too.”

After a well-publicised health scare just before Christmas, Eckhart said he was not worried about his health but excited to umpire the team games.

Karratha players from West Pilbara Cricket Association will represent the Pilbara in the competition.
