Football: Kats top pre-season carnival
Karratha Kats have taken out the third annual North Pilbara Football League preseason carnival, defeating Dampier Sharks by 63 points, 10.11 to 1.2 in a one-sided final.
Matches began at 2.30pm in hot conditions that resulted in players physically challenged to back up for their next fixtures.
Sharks, which had just 18 players travel to Port Hedland, were forced to play the final straight after their last qualifying game, giving their opponents the edge.
Kats had a squad of 30 players make the trip and earlier beat undermanned reigning premiers Port Hedland.
In a concerning sign for 2012 competition, Wickham Wolves were forced to forfeit both their matches with only 12 players travelling for the carnival.
They fielded a side with the help of other teams, to give the other clubs some match practice. Karratha Falcons and South Hedland Swans each had one win and one loss for the day, with both taking in far from their best sides.
Sharks earlier defeated the Falcons before narrowly going down to the Swans
