Two Pilbara community organisations are set to deliver major sporting events after securing State Government funding as part of a $1.78 million investment in sport and recreation across WA.

Karlayura Rodeo and Pilbara Trailblazers are among the regional recipients supported through the sport and recreation events funding program, which aims to boost participation, strengthen communities and bring economic benefits to local areas.

Karlayura Rodeo has received $30,000 to deliver the 2026 Roebourne Rodeo, while Pilbara Trailblazers has secured $19,899 for the 2026 Red Dirt Backyard Ultra in Karratha.

Pilbara Trailblazers president Jacinta Homann said organisers were very excited to receive the funding.

“As a volunteer-led organisation, this support makes a real difference for Pilbara Trailblazers, helping us grow the event as a high-quality endurance experience while strengthening participation, capability, and connection across the Pilbara,” she said.

“The funding will directly support delivery of the 2026 RDBU and community development opportunities surrounding it.

“This includes expanding athlete support initiatives, strengthening volunteer capability, and building local skills in event delivery — ensuring we have the expertise to continue delivering the event for years to come.

“The community can expect the 2026 RDBU to be a welcoming, inclusive event that brings together runners, volunteers and supporters from across the region, creating the electric atmosphere it has become known for.

“Participants are encouraged to challenge themselves in an environment of support, camaraderie, and community spirit that celebrates everyone, regardless of fitness level.

“We’re proud to deliver a nationally recognised endurance event in Karratha that remains accessible to local and regional participants.”

Karlayura Rodeo co-founder Tui Magner said the funding would provide a significant boost for the Roebourne event.

“Receiving $30,000 through the State Government’s sport and recreation events funding program is a significant boost for Karlayura Rodeo Inc,” she said.

“This support strengthens our ability to deliver a culturally grounded, community-driven event for Roebourne and helps us continue building long-term opportunities for local people, businesses and riders.

“The funding will go directly toward essential event expenses including logistics, stock contractors, rodeo-qualified personnel, and engaging as many local businesses as possible to bring an event of this scale to life.

“As the rodeo is held on Ngarluma country, we will also be working closely with Ngarluma people within our community and local cultural providers to showcase their stories, traditions and identity throughout the program.

“For the 2026 Roebourne Rodeo, the community can expect an even bigger and more exciting action-packed event.

“We’re expanding our cultural elements, strengthening youth involvement, and building a program that reflects the pride, resilience and history of Ieramugadu.”

The Roebourne Rodeo 2026 is scheduled to take place on August 8.
