Town of Origin heats up in Pilbara
Inspired by the passionate State of Origin series, the rivalry between the Hedland and Karratha rugby league communities is set to be reignited.
The Town of Origin - Mate Against Mate competition is being developed by the Pilbara's NRL game development officer Chris Newman to allow rugby enthusiasts to play for their town.
"What better way to show off the spectacle of rugby league than in its own origin series throughout the year," he said. "This competition is being designed (to include) men's, under-18s and women's formats of the game and will be played in a best of three series."
Across the Town of Port Hedland and Shire of Roebourne regions, there are five senior teams which play in the Pilbara Rugby League competition.
For the Town of Origin series, players will come together in combined representative teams to play off against rival regions in a best of three series.
Newman said the series would determine the "dominant town" for each format.
Games also double as a recruiting base for the Pilbara women's and men's representative sides.
He said the new competition aimed to reinject and adapt town pride through "engaging and entertaining sport".
"This is a great initiative that I hope the Town of Port Hedland and the Shire of Roebourne community and councillors get behind," he said.
"Although the vast (majority of the) population (in these areas) are expats (this competition will) allow players to pride themselves on their new home and where they are from.
"We are hoping we can get a naming rights sponsor for the series and perhaps sponsors for each of the teams representing each town."
The first game of the series will take place on May 24 at Wickham Sports Complex.
Game two will be held in Hedland at a yet-to-be-announced venue on June 28.
The series will wrap up on August 1 at Karratha Leisureplex.
Applications are open for the positions of coach, manager and trainer of each side.
