Human remains found in bushland west of Brisbane are believed to be those of missing Queensland woman Jana Armstrong, with a man now charged with her alleged murder.

Police were notified of the grim discovery by a group of hunters walking through the bushland off Esk Hampton Road at Redbank Creek on Friday night after being called to the area about 10.40pm.

A crime scene was declared shortly after officers arrived, with forensic specialists remaining at the site as investigations continue.

While the remains are yet to be formally identified, detectives believe they belong to Ms Armstrong, who was reported missing after she was last seen at Newtown, near Toowoomba, on July 7.

Investigators are in contact with Ms Armstrong’s family.

As part of the investigation, Darling Downs detectives executed a search warrant at a Harristown property on Saturday before taking a 48-year-old man into custody.

He has since been charged with one count of murder in relation to a domestic violence offence and is due to appear in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Sunday.

Police are continuing to piece together Ms Armstrong’s final movements and are appealing for public assistance.

Detectives are particularly seeking CCTV, dashcam or other vision captured between Toowoomba and Esk, including along Esk Hampton Road and the New England Highway, between 10.30pm on July 7 and 1.30am on July 8.
