Triple M cuts: Goldfields to lose only local commercial breakfast radio show after ‘challenging’ year for SCA

The Goldfields is set to lose its only local commercial breakfast radio show after a “challenging and disappointing” financial year for the station’s owner. Triple M Goldfields will soon air its final breakfast show from Kalgoorlie-Boulder as station owner Southern Cross Austereo brings sweeping changes to its regional radio network. Regional breakfast shows across WA will be cut under the changes, with two Triple M Breakfast shows to be broadcast across regional WA in their place from January. Former Goldfields Triple M presenter Glenn Wilson, who won multiple awards for his Glenney for Breakfast show during the 15 years he worked at the station, said the news was “devastating” for the community. Mr Wilson, who is also the Kalgoorlie-Boulder mayor, said a breakfast show broadcast from outside the Goldfields would lose its connection with listeners. “The impact of this (decision) is enormous, and it’s beyond the commercial benefits the company sees,” he said. “It’s been a very difficult decision for me to comprehend with the amount of passion and the emotion that I have involved in the show, however at the end of the day it is a commercial decision by the company.” Mr Wilson said the show was not only a “vital” form of information for the community but also an important source of entertainment and comfort during times of crisis. “I am extremely emotional about it and very passionate about it but I also know the legacy that it’s left and also the legacy that will never be replaced by it,” he said. The Abbey for Breakfast show which is aired from Kalgoorlie-Boulder will be dissolved, with an SCA spokesperson confirming a local broadcast would continue in the form of a workday show. “Triple M will continue to present local shows from each WA regional Triple M station across the workday,” the spokesperson said. “This commitment extends the local content in some markets and allows Triple M to continue to create bespoke client responses and maintain its commitment to local content throughout regional WA.” Former general manager for Triple M in the Goldfields Rae Hutchinson said to her it did not make sense to cut the breakfast shift. “It’s sad for the people of the Goldfields ... and to be honest the breakfast shift is the money shift, it makes no sense as a business,” she said. “The radio landscape is a changing world, but I see no business reason that this should happen.” Ms Hutchinson said the Kalgoorlie-Boulder station had historically been among the most successful for SCA. An SCA spokesperson said regional listeners could tune into one of two breakfast shows. “In 2025, the Triple M network, Australia’s fastest-growing radio network over the last two years, will broadcast two Triple M Breakfast shows across regional WA,” they said. “The new Triple M shows commence on January 13, 2025, and will be Triple M Breakfast with Michael Ross and Angie Ayers and Triple M Breakfast with Robbie Von and Carly Portch, and will deliver strong and engaging content for these regions.” The rollback of regional breakfast shows comes amid testing times for Southern Cross Media Group. Chair Heith Mackay-Cruise at this week’s annual general meeting said the company’s FY24 revenue of $499.4 million was down one per cent from the previous year, while underlying group earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation of $66.2m was 14.3 per cent below FY23 Mr Mackay-Cruise said the board decided not to pay a final dividend for the financial year. “Let me start by acknowledging that the most recent financial year was a challenging and disappointing one for our company, and especially for our shareholders,” he said. “With persistently high inflation and slowing economic conditions, broadcast advertising markets were depressed for much of the year.” Mr Mackay-Cruise said the group was responding to challenges with initiatives to “transform our operating model” while “resetting our cost base”. Later in the address, he voiced concerns that regulation could impact the sustainability of Australian broadcast media businesses. “Our largest competitors for audiences and advertising dollars are global giant digital platforms — such as Meta, Google and Spotify — but Australia’s pre-internet regulation severely restricts our ability to compete with them on a level playing field,” he said. “We celebrate our connection to local communities around Australia but without regulatory change to enable consolidation and modernise regulation of Australian media businesses, that connection will in time become economically unsustainable.”
