Women in Tech pass through South West schools to show students what a career in technology could look like

Schools across the South West have been getting a firsthand look at technology. Tech Trails visited several South West schools this week, as a group of women from Women in Technology WA passed through to show students what a career in technology could be. With more than 8000 members, the not-for profit group visits schools across the State, bringing with them interactive activities and working experts to talk up the profession. Women in Technology WA partnerships and marketing manager Teagan McEwan said it was really important to bring Tech Trails to regional schools as they don’t often see these types of opportunities. “We want to show these students and these kids and parents that there’s so many learning opportunities, and that they can do anything they want to do — the opportunities are endless,” she said. MakerX Principal Software engineer Melissa Houghton said it was a great opportunity to show students the wide range of technology jobs still available to them in the regions. “Being here in Tech Trails at the regional schools is really important because we’re bringing the idea of technology and working in STEM to all different types of students that might not have exposure to this before,” she said. “It’s great to be able to contribute to some of the schools in the local South West area and bring them the ideas of what it means to work in technology and the different types of roles and jobs and opportunities that are available to them.” Balingup Primary School principal Nicole Corcoran said it was really wonderful to show women professions which can often be male-dominated. “It’s really wonderful for all of our students to see their opportunities, but particularly our girls to know that they can do anything too,” she said.
