Emergency services recover bodies of two women from waters at Streaky Bay, South Australia

Two women have died at a popular remote beach in South Australia.

A 67-year-old woman and a 65-year-old woman were pulled from the waters near Streaky Bay on the state’s Eyre Peninsula on Tuesday, following a large-scale search effort.

Emergency services were called to an area near Back Beach Road about 11.15am, the South Australian Police said, after reports two women had gone missing in the ocean while walking through the shallows.

The two women were pulled from the water but could not be revived.

The police are now preparing a report for the coroner.

The exact circumstances of the tragedy are still unclear, though 7News has reported the two women were fishing when they were swept into the water.

The police Water Operations Unit and SES helped with the search effort.

It marks another tragedy to strike the popular tourist getaway.

Earlier this year, a 28-year-old was fatally attacked by a shark while surfing at a beach southwest of Streaky Bay.
