A whale carcass has sparked a shark alert 90 minutes south of Perth, off Binningup Beach.
Fisheries officers are monitoring the carcass that washed up at the northern end of the beach on Monday afternoon, three days after a fatal shark attack off Sorrento in Perth’s north.
The Department of Primary Industries issued a public alert, warning that it may attract sharks close to shore and people should exercise additional caution, and report any sightings to Water Police on 9442 8600.
There were nine shark sightings reported in 24 hours off the south-west coast between Busselton and Eagle Bay, with the biggest a 3.5 metre white shark spotted at Curtis Bay near Dunsborough on Sunday morning.
The shark that killed Greg O’Neill off Sorrento has not been identified since Friday.
Capture gear was deployed, but withdrawn on Sunday afternoon.
The Westpac surf lifesaving helicopter also reported a three metre shark 250 metres off Mindarie Beach on Monday morning.
