Shire of Augusta-Margaret River seeking feedback on proposed trial to close the Barrett Street Weir carpark

The Shire of Augusta-Margaret River are seeking feedback for a proposed trial aimed to help ease growing pressures during the region’s peak season. A proposed trial put forward suggests closing Barrett Street Weir to vehicles from February 2026 to April 2026 by installing a lockable gate at the entrance to the carpark. It follows the shire’s partnership with the Peak Season Community Working Group as they work together to explore various ways to cope during the region’s busiest times of the year. The group created a series of recommended actions for the 2025-26 summer season, alongside a long-term roadmap to help guide management initiatives such as an overflow campsite. During the process, concerns surrounding antisocial behaviour and environmental impacts at the Barrett Street Weir during its busiest times of the year were raised, with the trial proposed in response. If successful, the shire will gather data and feedback during the trial to determine the effectiveness of the closure and its benefits and impacts. With submissions set to close on Monday, January 12, the community can share their feedback using the forms online or contact the shire for a hard copy.
