$8.5m neighbourhood centre with Woolworths, liquor store and fast food outlets tipped for Hammond Park

A local town centre anchored by Woolworths could sprout in the growing suburb of Hammond Park, with documents revealing plans for a $8.5 million shopping complex. The Hammond Park neighbourhood centre application shows a Woolworths supermarket, liquor store, food outlets, retailers and two standalone fast food outlets spanning three lots along Whadjuk Drive. The development is currently listed for comment via the City of Cockburn’s website and will have its fate decided by the Metro Outer Joint Development Assessment Panel at a future meeting. The development precinct would service a growing population in the locality, which is predicted to exceed 170,000 by 2036. Planning documents say the development would move the location towards becoming a “mixed-use” area, with Whadjuk Drive serving as a “main street” that would ultimately provide connectivity to Hammond Road. The total leasable area of the planned shopping precinct is more than 6000sqm, with the applicant also seeking approval for “flexible” leasing outcomes to provide consulting rooms, a health studio, lunch bar, restaurant and office space. It is one of several major developments planned for the growing suburb, which lies about 25km south of the CBD and was previously included within Banjup. Works to widen a stretch of Hammond Park to two lanes in both directions has been completed, along with new roundabouts at local intersections. The new Jilbup Primary School is being built and on track to open at the start of 2024. Education Minister Tony Buti previously said the school — formerly known by its planning name Wattleup East — would be a drawcard for local families. “This is an important moment for families in Hammond Park, as I am sure this new school will become a vibrant hub of teaching, learning and community activity,” he said. “Hammond Park is a popular suburb and I am pleased to be delivering a new, state-of-the-art school that will provide a high-quality education for the growing community.” Alongside the looming primary school, an extra 25 classrooms also opened at Hammond Park Secondary College in May this year. The works were a part of an education facilities overhaul to provide “state-of-the-art” classrooms for secondary students as part of a $27 million project. Public consultation for the neighbourhood centre closes November 17.
