Biosecurity crisis: WA’s polyphagous shot-hole borer quarantine zone expanded as far as Jarrahdale

The State Government has expanded its quarantine area of the tree-killing polyphagous shot-hole borer in a bid to curb its spread. The new boundaries include 30 local governments — spanning out to Armadale, Kwinana, Mundaring, Rockingham and Serpentine-Jarrahdale. Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development chief plant biosecurity officer Vincent Lanoiselet said the zone would be broken down into two divisions. Zone A has recorded higher infections and will have stricter requirements around the movement of wood material than Zone B, which has fewer infested trees. Dr Lanoiselet described the expansion as a “buffer zone”. The changes come into effect from Friday, September 6. “Expanding the quarantine area will provide an additional buffer zone where we are increasing surveillance for the borer and taking immediate action to manage the pest in this area,” Dr Lanoiselet said. The south-east Asian pest has so far led to the destruction of more than 3000 trees across Perth since its detection near Fremantle in August 2021. A false alarm that the borer had spread into regional WA was raised in the Shire of Harvey in August when staff misidentified a European house borer for a shot-hole borer in two locations within the local government. Shire president Michelle Campbell said staff had worked with DPIRD to identify and treat of infested trees. Days later, however, Ms Campbell issued a public update: “We have since advised both DPIRD and WALGA of the mistaken identity.” Ms Jarvis later accused shire councillors of intentionally sparking a false rumour to score political points for the Liberal Party. “I’m not blaming officers at the Shire of Harvey because they made a mistake but what I am blaming is ... councillors on the Shire of Harvey who are Liberal Party candidates — who politicised incorrect information,” he said. DPIRD staff had also inspected a New Zealand Christmas tree in the Bunbury area in July but determined it was not the shot-hole. The department also has more than 3000 surveillance traps including in regional areas between Geraldton and Esperance.
