Cameron Graham: Rapist who escaped custody 10 years ago while being flown to Perth refused parole

A rapist who escaped from custody 10 years ago while being flown to Perth so his family could visit him at Christmas has been refused parole, The West Australian has confirmed. Cameron John Graham’s sexual assault on a young Perth mother in 2013 was so shocking that the District Court judge who sentenced him struggled to find the words to describe the crimes. “It is difficult for a reasonable human being to comprehend the conduct you engaged in,” Judge Christopher Stevenson said in giving Graham, now aged in his 30s, an 11-year prison sentence. As reported recently by The West Australian, Graham was set to be considered for parole in mid-January by the WA Prisoners Review Board. But in a statement given to The West on Thursday, a board spokesperson confirmed Graham’s parole bid had been refused. “I can advise Mr Graham was reviewed by the board on 16 January 2024. The board determined to deny his release to parole,” the spokesperson said. Graham’s knock back for early release will no doubt come as a huge relief to the young mother he attacked in 2013. Graham was on an amphetamine bender for three to four days before he carried out the terrifying home invasion and sexual assault. At the District Court sentencing in November 2013, the court was told how Graham sneaked into the mother of two’s house, repeatedly raped her and threatened to murder her children before forcing her to withdraw cash at an ATM. Graham pleaded guilty to a string of charges over the attack, including sexual penetration without consent, aggravated burglary with intent, sexual coercion and robbery. But just a month after he was jailed for the horrendous crime, Graham, along with another inmate, escaped from custody after being flown from Perth to Geraldton to be closer to his family for Christmas. He and the other escapee were recaptured soon after. His escape — and the fact he’d be flown from Perth at taxpayers’ expense for the Christmas treat — prompted a public outcry and calls for a major inquiry into the debacle. After Graham escaped from custody, the woman he attacked released a powerful 1000-word statement to The Sunday Times in which she said that her life had been “shattered on every level” as a result of the ordeal she had to go through. In her statement, the woman also said she was determined not to let the attack define her. “I do have a level of inner determination not to let this affect me for the rest of my life though,” she said at the time. “I am hopeful to one day be able to return to Australia and maybe Perth without the fear and traumatic memories which are so fresh to me now.”
