Clarkson man sentenced to three years prison over domestic violence bashing and using stolen bank cards

A Clarkson man has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison over stolen bank cards and a brutal string of domestic violence assaults. Shannon Dean Ah Chee, 50, appeared at Joondalup Magistrates Court on Friday via video link from Casuarina Prison and pleaded guilty to the 24 charges he was facing. The most serious were in relation to separate violent incidents on two nights against his partner in November at a Clarkson home. A police prosecutor told the court Ah Chee wanted the woman to leave the house with him to buy meth. When the woman refused, he viciously beat her, significantly damaging her eye socket, before taking her bank card and withdrawing money from an ATM. Police said when he returned, he held a knife to the woman accusing her of cheating and asked if someone was coming to the house to kill him. The police prosecutor said two weeks later Ah Chee dragged the same victim around the house and threatened her. Out of fear the woman urinated herself. When police arrived at the home, the man attempted to clean the urine from the floor with a T-shirt before continuing to act in an aggravated manner, physically dragging the woman away from police before he was arrested and placed in custody. Ah Chee’s lawyer told the court his client was a meth addict who used daily and had an inability to control his temper, as well as coming from a “very disadvantaged background”. Magistrate Evan Shackleton said “only imprisonment can be justified” before sentencing Ah Chee to two years and 10 months prison, backdated to November. Breaking down the sentence, Mr Shackleton handed down 25 months for the first incident on November 4 and 33 months for the second assault on November 19 — with some of those to be served concurrently. Charges also included 12 gains benefit by fraud offences over the use of a stolen bank card across the northern suburbs in August last year.
