Aspiring First Nations journalists — as well as those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds — can now apply for a paid summer internship at Seven West Media.

The summer internship program, formed in partnership with Media Diversity Australia and Google News Initiative, is calling for expressions of interest from journalism students entering their final year of media or communication studies.

The program will place 10 students from five tertiary institutions at mainstream media outlets including The West Australian, Seven Network, New York Times, ABC, Southern Cross Austereo Radio, Network 10, MamaMia and Nine.

Over a six-week internship during January and February 2022, the interns will work full time and receive a weekly allowance to cover living expenses during that time..

Applicants must come from a First Nations or culturally or linguistically diverse background — or have an interest in growing First Nations and cultural and linguistic diversity in Australia’s newsrooms.

Potential interns must also be entering their final year of study in 2022 for their respective degrees.

To apply, applicants must submit a 500-word piece on themselves, the media organisation for which they are most interested in working, any stories of interest to them and why they believe they should be an MDA summer intern.

They must also attach a CV, one written reference and any examples of published work.
