A whole day of the Pinjarra Festival has been cancelled ahead of the WA Day long weekend as a storm — set to be “one of the worst” WA has seen in five years — descends on Perth.

Some areas of the State are at risk of being battered by tornadoes thanks to the weather system, which will hit WA over the weekend, with possible wind gusts of up to 125km/h.

A deluge of up to 50mm of rain could also fall in some areas.

The Festival had been scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, May 30 and 31, but the second day of the popular event was slashed by the Shire of Murray after a BOM forecast of heavy rain and damaging winds.

“Based on this advice and a briefing with emergency services, the Shire considers it necessary to prioritise the safety of stallholders, volunteers, contractors and attendees,” a statement said.

“While it was an extremely hard decision to make, the Shire believes this is the responsible choice.”

The festival will still go ahead on Saturday, according to planners, with an art exhibition and antique and vintage fair scheduled.

“The Shire sends its sincerest gratitude to all involved in the planning, preparation for day one of the 2026 event, and thanks vendors and event sponsors for their ongoing support,” the Shire statement said.

“We look forward to welcoming the community for a fantastic day on Saturday.”
