Shark warning after spearfisher has close call with 4m great white shark in Ocean Reef
A swimmer had a frightening close call with a great white shark after the predator attacked them while spearfishing off Ocean Reef on Sunday.
The encounter was reported by a member of the public at about 9.10am after the spearfisher’s fin was bitten by the shark while diving 6km offshore.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development said the spearfisher luckily didn’t receive any injuries from the shark, which was estimated to be around 4m long.
DPIRD has since issued a shark warning for Ocean Reef in the City of Joondalup, urging beachgoers to take additional caution in the area.
The department also encouraged people to adhere to any beach closures in place.
DPIRD officers, along with staff from other agencies are monitoring the situation.
