South Hedland arson attacks: Police hunt arsonist after series of deliberatley lit fires

Police are hunting an arsonist after a series of deliberately lit fires ignited in South Hedland within two hours. Three separate fires, located about two kilometres apart from each other, were reported to South Hedland Police on Tuesday evening. The first blaze kicked off at about 9.10pm on Murdoch Drive, which saw emergency services extinguish four small scrub fires by 9.40pm. However, about half-an-hour later another, another fire emerged on Daylesford Road — just a two-minute drive from the previous blaze. The two grassfires burnt 50sqm of land and were extinguished by firefighters by 10.30pm. It wasn’t until an hour later that police were alerted to a third fire, which erupted on Osprey Drive — located about 2km from both of the previous fires. This time round, police were alerted to multiple fires that had emerged down the street at 11.45pm. The fires were extinguished by 12.20am, which fortunately wrapped up South Hedland’s fiery night. These fires have since been declared as deliberately lit, and police are urging anyone with information to to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Rewards of up to $25,000 are available for information that leads to the identification and conviction of an arsonist.
