WA Police reveal horrific number of people killed in car crashes not wearing seatbelts

Police and road safety authorities say they are “amazed” by the disturbing number of people who continue to be killed in crashes because they are not wearing seatbelts. Shocking new data shows almost a quarter of people killed in motor vehicle crashes last year were not strapped in. The alarming new figures, compiled in a WA Road Safety Commission report, also show there were concerning increases last year in the number of alcohol-related fatalities. The Road Safety Commission report reveals 25 people were killed on WA roads last year who were not wearing seatbelts. That’s eight more than the previous year and a 9 per cent increase on the State’s preceding five-year average. Road Safety Commission director Sarah Mewett said the rate of people dying in crashes who were not buckling up was far too high. “Someone in a serious crash is seven times more likely to die if they are not wearing a seatbelt,” Ms Mewett said. “It’s easy to think it will never happen to you, but the numbers show it does happen and it’s happening too often.” Seasoned police officers who spoke to The West Australian this week on the condition of anonymity said it was a major issue. “It still amazes me we still see people not wearing seatbelts,” one officer said. Another experienced traffic officer told The West young women and tradies were among those most often found to not be wearing seatbelts. “We get loads of tradies and young girls not wearing seat belts, or who wear them under their arm,” the officer said. “As a result, many of them get thrown out of the car in a crash and the car rolls on top of them. “We had a case recently where a girl got thrown out of the car, landed in a lake and drowned. “The consequences can be so much more than the $550 ticket.” The Road Safety Commission report also shows alcohol-related incidents made up nearly a quarter of all road fatalities last year. In 2022, 38 people lost their lives in such crashes, five more than in 2021 and a 10 per cent increase on the five-year average. The report also reveals 12 young people aged 17-19 died in crashes last year, double that witnessed in 2021. In order to address the high rate of young people being killed on WA roads, the RAC on Wednesday will host an event at RAC Arena for 10,000 high school students, who will witness a live crash scene re-enactment and hear first-hand accounts from road trauma victims. “Inexperience and overconfidence are a deadly combination, which is why it’s crucial we continue to focus on educating our young drivers about road safety, including the effects of alcohol, speed, reckless behaviour, and distraction,” the RAC’s Will Golsby said.
