A flood warning has been issued for parts of the Pilbara coast in West Australia’s northwest with heavy rain forecast across the region.

Emergency WA says people in the De Grey River, Pilbara Coastal Rivers, Fortescue River, Onslow Coast, Ashburton River and Sandy Desert catchments should prepare for minor flooding on Tuesday and Wednesday.

There is no immediate danger but people have been urged to keep up to date in case the situation changes.

The Bureau of Meteorology said a slow-moving surface trough would deepen over the Pilbara district, forming a cloud band with embedded thunderstorms.

It said 75 mm of rain had fallen over the watch area by early Tuesday morning with further isolated falls of up to 120 mm possible.

“Catchments in the flood watch area are moderately dry with some areas still wet with isolated areas of flooding from last week’s rainfall, particularly around Pannawonica and Onslow,” the bureau said.

“Heavy rainfall is forecast to continue over the Pilbara district, extending further inland during the day and overnight to reach central desert areas and the northeastern Gascoyne during Wednesday.”

Authorities said flooding of low-lying areas and river rises were expected with many roads and secondary highways likely to be affected.

They said some communities and homesteads might be isolated.
