Winter arrived six days early as Perth shivered through its coldest night of the year on Tuesday night.

The temperature reached a minimum of 5.4C at 5am. It was even colder around the metro area with Jandakot shivering through 5.1C.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Hilary Wilson said the cold fronts which drenched the metropolitan area at the start of the week drew in cold air from south, resulting in the low temperatures.

The chilly night followed Perth’s coldest May day in 18 years on Monday when the maximum temperature was only 14.7C.
