Perth weather: The city’s record-breaking summer continues with its sixth successive 40C day

Perth hit 40.4C just after noon on Sunday, marking the sixth successive day the city has reached temperatures of 40C and above.

The city continues to smash its record for most 40C days in a row, after beating the previous record of four on Thursday.

Perth is the second capital city in Australia to hit six 40C or above days in a row, equalling Adelaide’s achievement of six successive days in 2009.

Sunday also marks the eleventh day of the Summer to hit over 40C.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Catherine Schelfhout said the usual pattern which causes hot weather has been particularly stagnant but relief is on its way.

“It’s more common for that kind of system to last a few days and then for some other big weather system like a ridge or a front to come to push it all East, but we just haven’t had anything like that to move it along,” Ms Schelfhout said.

“The last few days we have been getting our maximum during the day but now we have our sea breeze in and we will be seeing a change tomorrow with more south-easterly winds.”

Unfortunately, the cooler weather won’t be staying for long with next Saturday forecasted to hit a top of 39C.

Ms Schelfhout confirmed it is too early to determine how long the next heatwave will last.
