Donald Trump has set his sights on another major landmark on the world map, suggesting the Strait of Hormuz should be renamed “Trump Strait” as fighting with Iran in the region continues.
The US President floated the idea on Truth Social in a post asking whether the strategic waterway should be given his surname.
“Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT???” he wrote on the platform.
“Like America itself, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before!”
Following the comments, the White House took to social media to share a map of the Gulf with the suggested name edited in, adding “It’s got a nice ring to it.”
Mr Trump has in recent weeks repeatedly threatened to claim sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, even posting a map showing the waterway as a “new US territory.”
But when he was later asked by a reporter if he was serious about the proposed Strait of Hormuz rebrand, the president appeared to laugh it off as a joke.
“It was just thrown out there,” Mr Trump said.
The proposal marks the latest in a series of geographical rebranding efforts by the president, who has made changing place names a feature of his administration.
Last week, Mr Trump signed an order directing the US government to refer to Lake Ontario as “Lake America” as a trade spat between the US and Canada escalates.
The name change has also begun appearing on digital maps, with Apple being the latest platform to update the name of Lake Ontarioto “Lake America” on its Maps app.
But the change on Apple Maps is currently only visible to US-based users, with people elsewhere in the world continuing to see Lake Ontario displayed.
For Australian Google Maps users, the lake continues to be listed under both names, appearing as “Lake Ontario” and “Lake America”
Google has confirmed the naming displayed on Maps varies depending on the user’s location.
“People using maps in the US will see ‘Lake America,’ those in Canada will continue to see ‘Lake Ontario,’ and those outside of the US and Canada will see both names,” Google said in a blog post issued on Saturday.
Mr Trump celebrated the update on Truth Social, writing: “Google Maps changes Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America’ on US phones.”
