An EasyJet passenger has accused the airline of “abandoning travellers” after hundreds were allegedly left stranded for more than a day at an airport in Montenegro.

Retired psyhcology lecturer Ron Roberts, 70, said that he spent more than 24 hours waiting at Tivat Airport after his flight to London Luton was repeatedly delayed.

Dr Roberts told the Mirror that he was due to depart at 12.40pm on Saturday but remained stuck at the airport the following afternoon as passengers waited for updates.

Describing the ordeal as “absolute chaos”, he claimed travellers were left with little information and without access to food or water while they waited.

“It was absolute chaos. They wouldn’t do anything. They left people without food or water,” he told the outlet.

Dr Roberts, who was travelling alone after his wife returned home from their holiday early to visit her sister, alleged passengers were ordered to leave the airport overnight because the terminal was closing, despite being told accommodation in the area was already fully booked.

“We were all thrown out of the airport ... forced to sleep in the street,” he said.

“They said you’ve got to go and ... you’ve got to go and arrange your own accommodation and travel.

“Even though they’d already told us there’s no free accommodation in the area. I said it’s not possible to do that.”

Dr Roberts returned to the airport once it had reopened but found passengers still waiting in a corridor near the departures area for news about when they would be able to leave.

According to Dr Roberts, the conditions inside the airport became increasingly overcrowded overnight, describing the packed terminal as unsafe after witnessing another traveller collapse.

“I’m an old Liverpool fan, if you imagine trying to get into the Kop in the 1960s or 70s, the entire airport is like that ... it’s rammed, suffocating, you can’t breathe here,” he said.

“It is dangerously unhealthy. And nobody cares.

“My health is getting endangered, I called the doctor this morning. The guy down there is just told us he’s on stage four cancer, he’s fainted.

“They called medical staff and they will not do anything. There’s no law here, it is I am not exaggerating, it’s completely lawless.”

An EasyJet spokesperson said that Dr Roberts’ flight was delayed overnight and revealed the cause of the grounded plane.

“Flight EZY2638 from Tivat to London Luton yesterday was delayed overnight due to the aircraft experiencing a bird strike on a previous flight,” a spokesperson told the Mirror.

“Unfortunately, the flight has been delayed departing today due to air traffic control restrictions.

“We have been doing all possible to minimise the impact of the disruption and while we always look to secure hotel accommodation, as there was very limited availability, we advised customers they would be reimbursed for booking they own.

“While this was outside of our control, we are very sorry for the difficulty this caused.

“Our customers’ safety and wellbeing is our highest priority and we are looking into the experience in the airport with our ground handling provider at Tivat, as this is not the level of support we expect for our customers.”

A Foreign Office spokesperson said they are “in contact with the local authorities” about the situation at the airport.
