The White House Correspondents’ Asscociation dinner was thrown into turmoil after a shooter opened fire at the event inside the Washington Hilton, causing high-profile guests to take cover and evacuate.
US President Donald Trump addressed the situation at a press conference where he confirmed the shooter, a man in his 30s, was taken into custody.
While Trump, first lady Melania Trump and “all protectees” were deemed safe, one Secret Service agent was shot in his vest after the shooter ran through a Secret Service checkpoint at the hotel.
“The man has been captured, they are going to his apartment, he lives in California, he’s a sick person,” Mr Trump said.
“He looked pretty evil when they had him down; he was fighting hard.”
