US President Donald Trump has announced what he described as a “historic” agreement to secure the complete disarmament of Hamas and all other armed groups in Gaza, claiming the deal marks a major step towards ending the conflict and reshaping the territory’s future governance.
In a lengthy post on Truth Social, Mr Trump said the agreement would pave the way for Gaza to be governed by a new Palestinian administration that would work alongside what he called the “Board of Peace”, while ensuring Israel “will have the security it deserves” and that Gaza would no longer be used as a base for attacks.
Mr Trump said the agreement forms a key part of his 20-Point Plan for the region and would be implemented in carefully managed stages. Under the proposal, armed groups would gradually disarm before Israeli forces withdrew from Gaza. An International Stabilization Force would then work alongside a newly established Palestinian police force to maintain security for both Gaza’s residents and neighbouring Israel.
“Today, the Board of Peace reached a HISTORIC agreement for the COMPLETE DISARMAMENT of Hamas and all other armed groups in Gaza,” Mr Trump wrote.
He said the deal represented significant progress after more than a year of war, describing it as a turning point following the humanitarian crisis and hostage situation that followed the October 7 attacks.
Mr Trump thanked mediators Egypt, Qatar and Türkiye for helping broker the agreement, while also praising members of his own team for what he described as their tireless work in securing the breakthrough.
“The threat that emerged from Gaza on October 7 will NOT be allowed to rebuild!” he wrote.
He concluded by declaring the agreement would place Gaza “in the hands of a new Palestinian government that serves its PEOPLE” before congratulating those involved on what he called “this AMAZING DEVELOPMENT, THAT EVERYBODY SAID COULD NEVER BE ACHIEVED!”
Senior Hamas officials later confirmed an agreement had been reached with Israel that includes provisions covering the group’s weapons and the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip.
A Hamas official said the movement now expected international mediators and the Board of Peace to ensure Israel complied with the terms of the deal.
“An agreement has been reached regarding the issue of weapons … furthermore, an agreement has been reached on a gradual withdrawal of (Israeli forces)“ from the strip, the official said.
