A three-year-old girl and a man are in a critical condition after being found unconscious in their Adelaide home.

Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said the incident, which involved a gas cylinder, could be domestic violence-related.

"It's still very early in the investigation," he told reporters on Thursday.

"Obviously very tragic circumstances but ... it's too early to be specific about the causes and what the investigation is going to involve."

SA Police were called to the Eden Hills property in the southeastern suburbs about midnight and found the girl and 43-year-old man inside a bedroom.

The man was taken to Flinders Medical Centre in a critical condition and remains under police guard.

The young girl has since been stabilised and transferred to the Women's and Children's Hospital.

A woman and another child who were also at the property were uninjured.

Police say the incident was not random as all persons involved lived at the home.
