US Government shutdown: Senate approves funding to reopen Government, House set to vote on Wednesday US time

The Senate has approved a funding package to reopen the US Government as it continues the longest-ever streak of shutdown, with one last hurdle standing in the way of getting back to business.

The vote occurred late on Tuesday night in Washington, DC, where the Senate approved a funding package that had won over some Democrats, much to the dismay of others.

Eight Democrats crossed the floor, ultimately handing Republicans the numbers required to break the standoff.

Mr Trump said he supported the latest funding package deal, which would give Democrats the opportunity to vote in the future over extended health subsidies for US citizens.

Now the vote has finally passed the senate, after 41 days of the shutdown, the House has been recalled.

Representatives are now making their way back to Washington, where they will need to approve the funding so that the Government can reopen.

The vote is expected on Wednesday, US times.

If the House didn’t approve the funding package the Senate has approved, the issue would be forced back to the Senate.
