Danielle Laidley runs an eye over every West Coast Eagle and Fremantle Docker after round 14. Who starred and who struggled? DOCKERS 1. Andrew Brayshaw: 10 The most consistent, hard-working and impactful midfielder on the ground. He had 31 touches, nine big tackles, nine clearances and six inside 50s, gaining 679 metres gained with eight score involvements. 2. Patrick Voss: 9 Voss did it all. He led and marked well for goals, kicking a crumbing goal as a key forward and had an enormous work-rate to kick one on the run. Finished with 3.2 , one goal assist and eight score involvements. 3. Sam Switkowski: 9 Was outstanding from half forward with nine score involvements and two goals assists from just 14 touches, which were crucial. Defensively he was able to cause turnovers with pressure. It will be a huge blow if he is to miss weeks with injury. 4. Shai Bolton: 9 Pure class around centre-bounce clearances and his decision-making with the ball as a high forward is elite, working to get nine score involvements. Mr Damage! 5. Caleb Serong: 9 Didn’t use the ball to his usual high standard, but his grunt around the contest and stoppage was elite. He racked up 10 tackles and eight clearances. Stood up in the last quarter with 13 touches when North Melbourne were coming hard. 6. Jordan Clark: 9 Had 26 penetrating touches, eight rebounds and gained over 700 metres to create seven score involvements from half back. That’s elite. 7. Luke Jackson: 8 Tristan Xerri got hold of Jackson in the first quarter and he was more suited to ruck against Jack Darling. But he did impact the game by extracting the ball as a midfielder, then pushing forward to kick a smart goal. 8. Josh Treacy: 8 Took eight marks and six of those were contested, playing mostly as a high key forward to give Fremantle a way inside 50. It was great work rate and body work. He stepped up late for the mark that saved the game. 9. Luke Ryan: 8 Had the better of the dangerous Cam Zurhaar across the game, with great bodywork and spoiling. 10. Heath Chapman: 7 Played with enormous desperation, intercept marking, reading the play and gaining possession at ground level. Showed great courage across the game. 11. Sean Darcy: 7 Had a huge battle with Xerri in the ruck. Darcy was able to arrest the ascendancy in the second and third quarter to match him in the strength stakes. 12. Brennan Cox: 7 Had a solid battle with Nick Larkey, spoiling and intercepting across the game. Larkey was able to get in behind the defence late in the game. 13. Nat Fyfe: 7 Came on just before three quarter time, for nine possessions - all handballs - at 100 per cent efficiency around the contest to set up his teammates. 14. Murphy Reid: 6 Played a smart game with solid bodywork, ground-ball gets and clean hands. His off-ball run to get on the end of a Fremantle chain of possession to goal was class. 15. Matthew Johnson: 6 Spread and found space on a wing. Defended poorly at a defensive 50 stoppage resulting in a goal and his kicking at times could have been better. 16. Corey Wagner: 6 Had an impactful game offensively, particularly in the second quarter, with four score involvements and three inside 50s, before running with the damaging, Luke Davies- Uniacke. 17. Bailey Banfield: 6 Another strong performance defensively. He spoilt strongly in the air, showed courage to take an intercept mark and penetrated the game offensively with five rebound 50s. 18. Karl Worner: 5 Was solid defensively across the first three quarters, had 15 touches and made some big tackles, but gave too much space late in the game to the high North forwards. 19. Jye Amiss: 5 Showed physicality early and flew for marks while leading hard. Took a strong contested mark late but missed two opportunities to kick goals. 20. Jeremy Sharp: 4 Was better than previous weeks, amassing 14 disposals on a wing. Supported the defence frequently, with some long exit kicks out of defensive 50. 21. Josh Draper: 4 Played mostly on Jack Darling. His spoiling was the highlight, but he was not able to provide any bounce from defence with only three disposals for the game. 22. Neil Erasmus: 3 Was slow to react on occasions and his disposals were sloppy at times. Finished with 12 touches before being subbed out just before three quarter time. 23. Michael Frederick: 3 Worked hard to get in behind the defence to mark but missed an opportunity to goal. Had little influence across the game. EAGLES 1. Tom McCarthy: 10 Brilliant performance across half back. He penetrated the game and wanted the ball in his hands. It’s an indictment on the rest of the team, being the first Eagle to hit 30 touches for this season. 2. Reuben Ginbey: 10 Without Ginbey, it’s more than a 10-goal deficit at quarter time.10 intercepts and rebounded well. That was a super effort. 3. Harley Reid: 9 Was consistent across the game, winning the ball in close with five clearances and amassing 28 touches. 4. Tyrell Dewar: 7 Very poor early in defence because he was far to loose. Moved to a wing where he penetrated the game with 24 kicks and 843 metres gained. 5. Jack Graham: 7 Worked his backside off all game, winning 24 touches. He just plays with intent and sets a competitive standard. 6. Bailey Williams: 7 His best return of three goals at AFL level. He showed smart forward craft to get on the lead. 7. Liam Baker: 7 Started at half back and was under siege. Then moved into the midfield in the second quarter, having three clearances to stop the bleeding. Moved back to defence and played with intent. 8. Bo Allan: 6 Stood up under severe pressure early. Defended solidly and tried to provided rebound with his 14 touches. 9. Jack Williams: 6 Just kept turning up as a key forward. Built his game over four quarters, finishing with 1.1 and an equal team-high seven score involvements 10. Elijah Hewett: 6 Missed tackles and was poor over the ball in the first quarter. Had a good second term to stem the Carlton rampage. He was poor in defensive transition. Needs to work harder over the whole game. 11. Liam Ryan: 6 Always looked threatening around the ball and his clearance work around the centre bounce was a positive for a poor midfield. 12. Jamie Cripps: 6 Could have kicked three goals but finished with 1.3 and used the ball well in field play. 13. Liam Duggan: 5 Started on Patrick Cripps, but didn’t stop him and didn’t win the ball. Shifted to half back where he was reasonable, intercepting and trying to rebound the ball. 14. Ryan Maric: 5 Had 17 touches on the wing, but didn’t penetrate the game, just wandered through the game without intent. 15. Oscar Allen: 5 Went behind the ball in the first quarter to try and stop the bleeding. Led well, but his ball use was ordinary. Fingers crossed with the injury. 16. Sandy Brock: 4 Was too slow with the pace of the game and was caught in possession too often. 17. Tim Kelly: 3 His 10 touches and four score involvements is just not enough. Is showing no passion to play at present. 18. Jack Hutchinson: 3 Just doesn’t get enough ball as a winger or forward. Needs to have far more impact. 19. Tyler Brockman: 3 Is just operating on talent at the moment. He had nine possessions and a goal, but they need more when the game is hot. 20. Clay Hall: 3 Had nine possessions in 40 minutes of football, but had no penetration and burst in a one-paced midfield. 21. Harry Edwards: 3 Was poor and undisciplined in defence. Spends too much energy cursing himself instead of focusing on the next contest. 22. Matt Flynn: 2 Very poor. Showed no fight early as the No.1 ruck. Had poor bodywork and got beaten in down-the-line marking contests far too often. 23. Jayden Hunt: 2 Might as well have been non-existent on a wing having only two possessions before being subbed out. Not acceptable.
