VideoWATCH: Fremantle captain Nat Fyfe will likely be sidelined for 12 days after copping a nasty head knock.

Giant Sam Reid has been slapped with a two-game ban for his bump on an unsuspecting Nat Fyfe that left the Fremantle superstar concussed.

Fyfe will now miss the match with Carlton as part of the AFL’s mandatory 12-day concussion protocol.

In its decision, the Match Review Panel found Reid engaged in rough conduct in the third quarter collision with Fyfe at Optus Stadium.

The collision was assessed as careless and both high impact and high contact.

With an early guilty plea, Reid will miss the next two games.

Dockers club legend Matthew Pavlich said players needed to be aware penalties were based on the outcome — not the intent, as seen by Geelong star Patrick Dangerfield’s three-game ban for his round one hit on Crow Jake Kelly.

“The outcome was that Fyfe went off, he got concussed and he’ll miss 12 days,” Pavlich said on SEN.

“The outcome as we know, after P Dangerfield in round one, no matter how much you try to protect yourself or brace, if the outcome means the other person is concussed or seriously injured, it means you’re in trouble.

“(Reid) wasn’t technically bumping forcefully but it’s rough conduct every day of the week.

“We all look at that one on the weekend and the Dangerfield one… were they trying to hurt them? The answer is no.”

Pavlich said while he understood Reid had a split-second to react before making contact with the Dockers superstar, he has a responsibility to ensure his contact is made safely.

“What he has to do is not get him in the head,” Pavlich said.

“Either Sam Reid has to not get him in the head, or the rules have to change.

“(But) that’s a wholesale change at a match review level that can’t be underdone mid-season.”

Match Review Officer Michael Christensen said he was wary to set an automatic suspension precedent for any concussions.

“In this particular case, there was certainly a long discussion around whether there was a brace or a bump,” Match Review Officer Michael Christensen said.

“But we believe there was an election to bump.

“There’s been numerous examples over my time when there’s been a player concussed, but there’s not been a case to answer.

“But to say that any concussion is automatically a suspension is actually not correct.”

In the only other charge from Sunday’s games, Richmond’s Jack Graham was fined $1000 for making contact with an umpire.
