VideoAFL: The Fremantle Dockers have picked up their first win of the 2021 season after dispatching a disappointing GWS Giants outfit.

Footy commentator Mark Robinson admits he thought David Mundy’s career was over in 2019, but says he was “rapt” by the veteran’s performance against GWS.

Mundy’s day out ended with 35 disposals, five tackles and six clearances at Optus Stadium on Sunday, as the Dockers easily beat the Giants by 31 points.

Speaking on AFL 360 on Monday night, Robinson happily conceded he was wrong about Mundy.

“I actually had to check during the last quarter how old he was,” Robinson said.

“I thought David Mundy was going out the door about 33.

“A year and a half ago he was moved to half forward and he was told to survive there.

“They were bringing kids into the middle.”

By half-time, Mundy had more than 20 disposals to his name for just the seventh time in his career.

Robinson said Mundy stood tall when it mattered, after skipper Nat Fyfe was subbed out of the game with concussion.

“Fyfe went out and Mundy’s gone back in (to the middle).

“He’s a gorgeous kick and he’s tough.

“I was rapt to see him yesterday.

“Everyone’s talking about Cerra, Brayshaw and Serong, but the old boy led the way yesterday.”

Mundy ended the 2020 season with no guarantee of a contract in 2021.

The veteran was forced to wait until November to learn whether he’d get another shot in purple after shortened AFL lists and uncertainty over the salary cap stalled talks.

Both Mundy and Dockers legend Matthew Pavlich remain the only WA-based players to reach the magical 300-game milestone.

Mundy (334) remains second on the Dockers’ all-time games played list, behind Pavlich on 353.

He is the last remaining 2003 draftee still playing AFL, following the retirement of Heath Shaw at the end of 2020.
